Research, Internships & Volunteering
Let’s avoid Academic Tourism and Voluntourism: together we can work towards an ethically sound future for research and volunteering in Tanzania.
Being researchers themselves, not only experienced the challenges of conducting fieldwork in Tanzania first hand but also witnessed the struggles of fellow

researchers. They want to offer assistance to researchers and students in obtaining the required permits on the various policy levels and in obtaining access to the field. With the help of our own experience in the field and network with a variety of human rights organisations, community service projects and NGOs in Arusha and surroundings, we can help you get started with your research! Just sit back in one of our comfortable sofas in the shade of a banana plant while we prepare the ground for you. And where better to transcribe your interviews and
write down your findings afterwards than in our beautiful garden?
We furthermore offer training in ethical fieldwork. Try as you might, it is almost impossible to predict the challenges and ethical dilemmas that might arise during your stay in the field. A thorough training by experienced researchers might however prepare you to cope with potential difficulties in the field
Volunteer programmes & training
Apollo Villa also wants to be a platform for ethical volunteering. Volunteer programmes are booming in Tanzania and in Africa in general. The high demand for volunteering positions has created a new business of so-called “Voluntourism”. Providers focusing on profit from this business might not always have the wellbeing of the targeted community at heart, or might not be aware of potential perverse effects of well-intended volunteer programmes. Not seldom this has led to disappointment on both the side of the volunteer and of the targeted community.

To avoid this, we link future volunteers to our selection of ethically sound NGOs and offer training on ethically responsible volunteering.
